Country facts

Austria sits in central Europe with about 9 million people and shares borders with eight countries. German is the official language. Vienna, the capital, is home to a large share of the country’s universities and to major international organisations including the UN and OPEC.

Higher education system

Austrian higher education runs across public universities, universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), private universities and university colleges of teacher education. Public universities focus on research-led degrees, while Fachhochschulen are vocational and include compulsory industry placements. All follow the Bologna bachelor–master–doctorate structure.

Admission requirements

  • Recognised secondary or bachelor's qualification for the level applied for
  • German B2/C1 for German-taught programmes, IELTS 6.5 for English-taught
  • Proof of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) before the visa application
  • Motivation letter and CV
  • Proof of sufficient funds and health insurance
  • Some programmes have entrance examinations
Student visa — Austria
Apply for an Austrian student residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Studierende) at the embassy. Processing can take up to three months, and you must show accommodation, insurance and sufficient funds for the full year.
