About Portugal

Country facts

Portugal occupies the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula, with about 10.5 million people and a long Atlantic coastline. Portuguese is the official language. Lisbon is the capital and Porto the second largest city; both are major university centres.

Higher education system

Portuguese higher education is binary, split between universities offering theoretical and research-led degrees and polytechnic institutes offering applied, professionally oriented programmes. Both operate under the Bologna framework with ECTS credits.
