Study in Europe without IELTS

Many European universities admit students without an IELTS score — through a medium of instruction letter, an internal English test, or an accepted alternative. Here is how it actually works, and where it does not.

Routes

Four ways students are admitted without IELTS

Medium of Instruction letter

If your previous degree was taught in English, many universities accept an official MOI letter from your institution in place of a test.

University's own English test

Several universities run their own online English assessment or interview and admit on that result.

Accepted alternatives

Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic, TOEFL and in some cases Class 12 English marks are accepted instead of IELTS.

Video interview

Some universities waive the test entirely after a structured English interview with the admissions team.

Where

Countries where no-IELTS admission is common

Availability depends on the individual university and programme, not only the country. We check current policy for your shortlist before you apply.

GermanySome universities accept an MOI letter or their own assessment; many still require IELTS or TOEFL. Highly programme-dependent.
PolandMOI letters are widely accepted across private and some public universities.
Latvia and LithuaniaCommonly accept MOI letters or run an internal online English test.
ItalySeveral universities accept an MOI letter or assess English at interview.
SpainMany private universities accept an MOI letter or their own placement test.
Malta and CyprusFrequently accept MOI letters given English is used throughout teaching.
Hungary, Romania, BulgariaMedical and technical faculties often assess English at the entrance interview.
Ireland, Netherlands, NordicsRarely waive the requirement — plan on a recognised English test.
An important caution about the visa
Admission without IELTS and a visa without IELTS are two different questions. A university may admit you on an MOI letter, but some embassies still expect evidence that you can follow an English-taught course, and a few countries ask for a recognised test at the visa stage regardless of the university’s decision. We check both before you commit to a plan — and if a test is the safer route for your case, we will say so.
