About Hungary

Country facts

Hungary is a landlocked central European country of about 9.6 million people, bordered by seven countries including Austria, Slovakia and Romania. Hungarian is the official language and Budapest, on the Danube, is the capital and largest university city.

Higher education system

Hungarian higher education includes universities and universities of applied sciences, both state and private. Degrees follow the Bologna framework, though medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy and law remain long single-cycle programmes of five to six years.

Admission requirements

  • Secondary school certificate with strong science results for medical programmes
  • Entrance examination and interview for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science
  • IELTS 6.0 or medium-of-instruction letter
  • Apostilled and translated academic documents
  • Medical certificate of fitness
  • Proof of funds and accommodation
Student visa — Hungary
Apply for a Hungarian residence permit for study purposes at the embassy or consulate. You need your letter of acceptance, proof of accommodation, health insurance and evidence of funds. Processing usually takes 30 to 60 days.
