About Norway

Country facts

Norway is a Nordic country of about 5.5 million people, occupying the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula with a long Atlantic coastline. Norwegian is the official language, English is very widely spoken, and Oslo is the capital.

Higher education system

Norwegian higher education comprises universities, specialised university institutions and university colleges, most of them state-run. Degrees follow the Bologna structure. Teaching emphasises independent work, seminars and research participation.
