Why Romania

What makes Romania worth considering

Romania is one of the most cost-effective routes to an EU medical or engineering degree. English-taught medicine has been established for decades, and tuition plus living costs together are lower than living costs alone in much of Western Europe.

Low total cost

Tuition and living costs combined are among the lowest in the European Union.

Established medical degrees

Long-running English-taught medicine and dentistry recognised across the EU.

No entrance exam at many universities

Several medical faculties admit on academic record rather than an entrance test.

Strong IT sector

A large and growing software and outsourcing industry, especially in Cluj and Bucharest.

EU degree recognition

Bologna-aligned qualifications accepted throughout the European Union.

Growing English catalogue

An expanding set of English-taught engineering and business programmes.

Background

About Romania

Country facts

Romania is a south-eastern European country of about 19 million people, bordering Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova. Romanian is the official language and Bucharest is the capital; Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Timișoara are major university cities.

Higher education system

Romanian higher education is delivered by state and private universities accredited by the Ministry of Education. Degrees follow the Bologna structure, except medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and architecture, which remain long single-cycle programmes.

Admission requirements

  • Secondary school certificate with strong biology and chemistry for medical programmes
  • Letter of acceptance from the Romanian Ministry of Education
  • IELTS 6.0 or medium-of-instruction letter
  • Apostilled and translated academic documents
  • Medical certificate confirming fitness to study
  • Proof of funds and accommodation
Student visa — Romania
Romania requires a Letter of Acceptance to Studies issued by the Ministry of Education before you can apply for the long-stay study visa (D/SD). Allow additional time for this step, then apply for a residence permit after arrival.
