Background

About United Kingdom

Country facts

The United Kingdom comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with about 68 million people. English is the main language. The UK left the European Union in 2020, so its degrees and visas sit outside EU frameworks, though qualifications remain widely recognised.

Higher education system

UK higher education is delivered by universities and colleges regulated by bodies such as the Office for Students. Bachelor’s degrees usually take three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four in Scotland; taught master’s degrees typically take one year.

Admission requirements

  • Relevant bachelor's degree, typically 55–70% depending on the university
  • IELTS UKVI 6.0–7.0 depending on programme and university
  • Statement of purpose and academic references
  • CAS letter from a licensed student sponsor
  • Maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days
  • Tuberculosis test certificate for Indian applicants
Student visa — United Kingdom
Apply for a UK Student visa once your university issues a CAS. You must show maintenance funds held for 28 consecutive days, pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, and provide a TB test certificate. Note the UK is not in the Schengen area, so EU travel needs a separate visa.
