About Sweden

Country facts

Sweden is the largest Nordic country by area, with about 10.6 million people. Swedish is the official language and English is very widely spoken. Stockholm is the capital, with Gothenburg, Lund, Uppsala and Malmö hosting major universities.

Higher education system

Swedish higher education is almost entirely state-run, comprising universities with doctoral awarding powers and university colleges. Teaching emphasises independent study, group work and critical thinking, and most master’s programmes are taught in English.
